I watch Morana staring at the door the Maverick just walked out of, her fists clenching and unclenching at her sides. She runs her palms up and down her thighs looking for a knife that isn’t there.
Getting up from my place across the room I approach her and lay a gentle hand on her shoulder.
When she looks at me, her eyes glisten with fire and unshed tears. She blinks them away before they can fall. I would put my fist through Maverick’s face if I thought those were caused by him hurting her, but I have a feeling that in this situation, Morana is hurting herself.
I wish I could give her everything she wants, I’d give her the world. I’d rope the moon and stars and bring them down to earth for her. But the only thing she has ever wanted is the one thing she can never have.
Hades.
I just wish my love was enough for her.
I put my arms around her and bring her into my chest for a hug. I would do anything for her. We would all kill for her. We all have killed for her. I would even accept someone like Maverick into our life if he would make her happy.
If he could be the missing piece to the puzzle of Morana we have never been able to fully fix.
“What do you want to do?” I ask her quietly. Nash and Hunter appear in the living room, watching us.
“I want a job.” she says.
“No. What do you want to do about Maverick?” I ask firmly.
I want her to make a choice. I want her to tell me if she wants him. If he would make her happy where I haven’t been able to. I need to hear it, I need to hear her say the words. That she wants him, that she doesn’t want me.
“I want a job.” She repeats. Nash steps forward placing a gentle hand on her back.
“We don’t have any, darlin’.”
“I. Need. A. Job.” She grits out. her still sharped nails digging into my skin as she grips my sides. I try not to wince as I feel the blood start to pool under her nails and trail down my sides.
Hunter looks to where her nails are digging into my sides, her face buried into my chest, then back toward the front door where Maverick just left. His jaw ticks, and his hands ball into fists.
When he looks back at me, I shake my head just enough to let him know it wasn’t his fault. At least, I don’t think it was his fault.
As much as I want it to be as simple as beating the shit out of Maverick, we can’t blame someone else for our girl’s problems.
“I’ll call Aeron.” Nash says, grabbing his phone to get Morana a job before she loses her shit.
“They’ve got someone, he’ll be here within the hour. They’ll go straight to the basement.”
“I’m sorry.” she whispers.
“For what, love?” I ask her, as I run my hands up and down her spine trying to comfort her.
